Near the “Titanic” in the Atlantic Ocean, rescuers are frantically searching for a missing submarine that occasionally brings wealthy tourists to the famous wreck. The Oceangate Expeditions company confirmed there were people on board, but did not provide a number. “We are exploring and mobilizing all options to return the crew safely,” the BBC was quoted as saying in a statement. The oxygen supply on the “Titan” should last 96 hours. Among the crew would be a billionaire British businessman and adventurer who announced his participation on social media.
According to the company, five people can be accommodated in the 6.70 meter long submarine. Among them are up to three tourists, each of whom has to pay 250,000 dollars (224,000 Swiss francs). The tours, which depart from the Canadian island of Newfoundland, therefore last a total of eight days. According to the BBC, the company is advertising the carbon fiber submarine voyages as an opportunity “to step out of everyday life and discover something extraordinary”.
Boats and at least two aircraft were deployed to the suspected location about 1,400 kilometers east of the North American coast, the US Coast Guard reported on Twitter on Monday. “All of our attention goes out to the submarine crew members and their families,” said Oceangate. “We are working to ensure the safe return of crew members.” The company recently announced that an expedition was underway. According to the media, the alleged British participant wrote that it will probably be the only such expedition this year.
The Titanic sank in the North Atlantic on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in 1912, killing more than 1,500 of the 2,200 people on board. The remains of the famous luxury liner were discovered in 1985 at a depth of about 3800 meters. Movies such as the blockbuster “Titanic” (1997) starring Hollywood stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo di Caprio further fueled interest in the disaster. Only recently, using high-resolution 3D images, scientists have offered the most accurate representation of the wreck yet. (bal/sda/dpa)
