A new trial against Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who has been imprisoned in Russia for more than two years, has begun on charges of “extremism”. The trial began Monday at the IK-6 high-security detention camp in Melekhovo, where 46-year-old Navalny is being held, a reporter from the local AFP news agency said. Navalny was in court with his lawyers.
Navalny faces up to 30 years in prison on charges of “extremism”. The opponent of head of state Vladimir Putin was treated at the Berlin Charité in 2020 after being poisoned, for which he blames the Kremlin. After recovering, he returned to Russia in January 2021, was immediately arrested and later sentenced to nine years in prison for “fraud”. (AFP)
