Today, the Russian judiciary begins a new trial, this time for extremism, against the imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.who could be sentenced to another 30 years in prison.
“Journalists, of course, will not have access (to the courtroom),” Navalny’s team wrote on Telegram.
It is expected that the media will be able to follow the trial on television screens set up in another room.
Also on the dock is Daniel Jolodni, the former technical director of the Navalni LIVE channel, who could be sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The trial is being held in prison number 6 in the Vladimir region, where Navalny has been held since June 2022.
Navalny himself previously condemned that the prison officials did not allow him to familiarize himself with the materials of the case, because in the cell where he was found he was allowed only one of the 196 volumes of the indictment.
As reported by the Mediazona portal, Navalni is accused of financing and encouraging extremist actions and create an organization, alluding to the banned Anti-Corruption Fund (FBK), which violated citizens’ rights.
In addition, applications were filed for the involvement of minors in dangerous activities related to illegal opposition protests.
Navalny took to his social networks to denounce the “criminal war” launched by President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine, accusing him of sending hundreds of thousands of Russians “to the slaughterhouse.”
In November 2022, Justice rejected an appeal by Navalni’s lawyers and upheld the eight-year prison sentence imposed on him for fraud and contempt of court.
