Several participants and two police officers were injured late Friday evening in Essen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia in a mass brawl between at least 80 people.
A police spokesperson said on Saturday that several people had been taken to hospitals. The police had been deployed with a “larger contingent” and a helicopter. It was still unclear Saturday morning how many people were injured in the alleged “clan crime conflict”.
The fight broke out around 9:30 p.m. in front of a restaurant. According to the information, several spectators have joined, making the last 113 people on the scene. Iron bars and knives were later found at the scene of the brawl. The police kept watch until well after midnight. On Saturday, “exploratory measures” were carried out to see if another fight could arise on Saturday, the spokesperson said.
Police are also investigating whether there was any connection to a brawl with several injured in Castrop-Rauxel, some 30 kilometers away, that also took place Friday night. At the moment, however, the personal details of those involved in the fight in Essen have yet to be determined, according to the spokesperson.
In Castrop-Rauxel, members of two families likely attacked each other with baseball bats, knives and bats on Thursday. Seven people were injured, a 23-year-old was initially in mortal danger. (sda/apa/dpa)
