The earth shook early Friday evening in western France. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported a magnitude of 4.9 and the French Seismological Bureau reported a magnitude of 5.3. The epicenter was therefore between the coastal town of La Rochelle and Niort further inland.
According to French media reports, people in numerous cities in western France said they felt the quake. The prefecture of Deux-Sèvres announced in the evening that a slightly injured person was being treated. There were initially no reports of serious damage. Environment Minister Christophe Béchu (49) wrote on Twitter about “one of the worst earthquakes in mainland France”. (SDA)
