Dog falls 300 feet – and is rescued by the Coast Guard

On June 14, while hiking in Ecola State Park, Oregon, a German Shepherd fell about 300 feet off a cliff—which is about the same height as the Statue of Liberty.

Miraculously, the animal survived the fall, but was injured and trapped on an inaccessible stretch of beach in the town of Cannon Beach. Rescue workers from the US Coast Guard were able to save the animal from the impending floods in the Pacific Ocean.

Called for support by the Cannon Beach Fire Department, the Coast Guard took off in a Jayhawk helicopter. A lifeguard rappelled down and approached the animal from the water. Then it could be taken to the helicopter and returned to its owner – less than 90 minutes passed between the fall and the reunion.

According to the Coast Guard, the German Shepherd was in good condition despite the fall from a great height and is expected to recover from his injuries. (lzo)
