Nine days after his abdominal surgery, Pope Francis should be able to leave the hospital this Friday. This was announced by Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni on Thursday.
The recovery of the 86-year-old is progressing as expected. The various studies have not yielded any striking findings. A day before the date of discharge, the head of the Catholic Church also received the surgical team to thank.
In addition, actual photos of the pope were published for the first time after the operation. The Vatican sent three statues of the pope at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. There Francis had visited the pediatric oncology and pediatric neurosurgery departments in the morning. The photos show the Argentinian in a wheelchair, on which he now depends.
The pope had surgery last week for an imminent intestinal obstruction. According to the doctors, the procedure, including general anesthesia, was successful and without complications. (saw/sda/dpa)
