More than a month after the violent death of a homeless black man on the New York subway, the charges against the suspect have been upheld. A jury voted on Wednesday to allow the 24-year-old white man to face trial, various American media reported unanimously. Mayor Eric Adams announced that the trial and justice could now proceed. There is no date yet.
According to witnesses, 30-year-old street artist Jordan Neely complained loudly on the subway in early May about hunger and thirst, but did not physically attack anyone. The 24-year-old – a former soldier – then choked him until he passed out. Neely died in hospital. The ex-soldier was charged with manslaughter a few days later.
Neely’s death sparked renewed debate about racism in the United States. Some draw parallels to the violent death of African-American George Floyd, who was killed by a white police officer in 2020. (sda/dpa)
