In the Russian-occupied part of the region, Moscow-appointed governor of the region, Vladimir Saldo, reported another death on Thursday, bringing the total number of victims to 18. Ukrainian authorities and rescuers recently reported ten deaths in the Kiev-controlled area. The Russian-controlled dam in the war zone collapsed on Tuesday. The water from the reservoir flooded dozens of cities.

The flood waters continued to recede, according to Ukraine’s flood cleanup staff. The level in the Kyiv-controlled regional capital Kherson in the Dnipro stood at 1.83 meters on Thursday morning. That was 30 centimeters less than the day before. However, according to the military administration in Kherson, 44 towns were still under water, including 27 on the Ukrainian-controlled banks of the Dnipro. Another 1,923 houses were flooded, said the head of the regional military administration, Alexander Prokudin.

According to Prokudin, 2,782 people, including 309 children and 80 people in need of care, have been evacuated by Ukrainian rescuers. However, the rescue operations have been under constant Russian fire since day one. On Wednesday in Kherson, two volunteer rescuers – one of them a foreign aid – were injured by Russian fire from their lifeboat. Ukraine accuses Russian troops of mining and blowing up the dam. On the other hand, Russia claims that the dam was destroyed by Ukrainian shelling.
