At least 79 dead and hundreds missing: the sinking of a ship full of migrants in The Ionian Sea, off the coast of Greece, is the most serious so far this year in the Ionian Sea and throughout Mediterranean, but according to the Red Cross it could even be an unprecedented migration tragedy.
The biggest migrant tragedy in the news happened on April 19, 2015, the day Italian prosecutors announced that 850 people had disappeared in Sicilian waters while trying to reach the European coast.
Just a week earlier, on April 13, another 400 went missing when their ship capsized off the coast of Libya.
According to the data provided by Missing Migrants Project of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) The number of migrants who disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea since 2014 is almost 27,000.
So far this year, 1,039 migrants have died in the Mediterranean Sea.

– March 31, 2009: At least 214 migrants have disappeared in a shipwreck in Libyan waters.
– March 22-27, 2011: Two boats with 335 and 160 migrants who were trying to reach the coast of Italy have disappeared.
– April 6, 2011: 250 people missing when a barge carrying more than 300 migrants capsized near the island of Lampedusa.
– May 6, 2011: an overloaded boat capsized near the coast of Libya with about 600 migrants, of whom only 130 survived.

– September 21, 2016.– At least 162 people died in the shipwreck of a ship near the Mediterranean coast of the Egyptian province of Kafr al Sheikh, on which about 600 emigrants were traveling.
– January 14, 2017.– At least 180 migrants lost their lives in a shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea, 30 miles off the coast of Libya, according to UNHCR.
– November 17, 2017.– The prosecutor’s office in the Italian city of Salerno estimates that around 100 people are missing in the Mediterranean Sea after a shipwreck on November 3.
– June 29, 2018 – About a hundred people disappeared 25 miles from the Libyan city of Qarabuli, from where they were heading to Europe.
– January 19, 2019 At least 114 people are missing and three others have been found dead after a boat carrying immigrants capsized 50 miles off the coast of Libya.
– July 25, 2019 – More than 150 people may have died when a dinghy trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea capsized near the Libyan coast.
– February 26, 2023 – 80 dead and 30 missing, in a shipwreck registered off the beaches of Steccato di Cutro, in the Calabria region of Italy.
