The cyclone is expected to reach wind speeds of up to 140 km/h, according to the Indian weather service on Thursday. There was also a warning for high waves and flooding on the coasts. Heavy rain showers were also expected. The area between the northwestern Indian city of Mandvi and the Pakistani mega metropolis of Karachi is said to have been affected.
More than 100,000 people have been evacuated from coastal areas to temporary shelters. Fishermen were instructed not to go out to sea.
India’s army, navy, air force and coastal forces say they stand ready to provide relief in affected areas. The World Health Organization (WHO) said emergency medicines have been made available in Pakistan’s stricken province of Sindh to ensure uninterrupted access to health care and limit the spread of infectious diseases.
