Russia apparently sending more combat dolphins to Crimea Trump after court appearance: ‘I am the only one who can save this nation’

Russia has reportedly increased the number of combat dolphins guarding the Sevastopol naval base. There would now be up to seven animals on patrol.

Russia apparently fears further attacks on its Black Sea Fleet port in Crimea and has reinforced a very special unit. The number of combat dolphins patrolling there has reportedly doubled.

According to a report by the naval website Navalnews, three to four dolphins trained for military purposes have been used so far. New analyzes should show that up to seven animals are now guarding the important port. According to the report, they should either be on the road more often, or Russia has expanded the area to be monitored.

The expansion of the dolphin unit could be in response to an attack on the port in October last year. At that time, underwater drones attacked a frigate and a minesweeper in Sevastopol.

Russia is said to have placed dolphins at the port entrance shortly after the invasion of Ukraine last year. In March, two animals were spotted on satellite photos from Maxar. In Sevastopol there was already a training center from the Soviet era, among other things beluga whales were also trained. A beluga whale believed to have been trained by Russia, fitted with a harness, was sighted off the coast of Norway in 2019 and in Sweden a few weeks ago.

The Crimean port is of strategic importance to Russia because the Black Sea Fleet has its headquarters here. The dolphins are only part of the defense. According to Navalnews, there is an observation ship in front of the harbor and helicopters and speedboats also circle regularly. In addition, there is anti-missile and radar surveillance. The dolphins would be deployed within an anti-ship barrier in case divers are able to get through. They are apparently taken to their place of performance in small boats, protected by a special tent.

The dolphins are intended to be used against combat divers who can commit acts of sabotage and infiltrate the naval base. Because they are faster and more agile in the water, the fins have a significant advantage over humans. According to a report by the Russian news agency Ria Novostii, the dolphins are carrying special sonar that can send signals directly to the military unit in question.

Dolphins are also used by other countries for military purposes. The US and Sweden have reported similar programs, and Israel and North Korea are said to be using them as well.
