When the mother comes home on Saturday afternoon, Kataleya, known as Cata, is no longer there. The girl (5) has disappeared. Is she lost? Did she run away? Was she kidnapped? Researchers are amazed.
The police are searching the entire block, checking trenches, examining every well in the area. The fire brigade also helps, lifts the covers of cesspools – nothing. Police evaluated surrounding surveillance cameras. The last photo from Cata was taken just after 3pm on Saturday and shows the girl walking out of the former hotel and then back in.
Half an hour later her mother comes home. The camera does not record that Cata would have left the building through this exit – so she must have disappeared through one of the back entrances.
Investigators from the Florence Public Prosecutor’s Office are now almost certain that the little girl of Peruvian parents has been the victim of a kidnapping. The family lives in the former Astor Hotel. In total, about a hundred people live in the building. Members of the man’s family also live there – but they have recently become untraceable. They would have had a fight with Cata’s mother.
Cata may have fallen victim to a family feud. Apparently, various criminal clans are struggling to occupy the former hotel – “rents” are extorted from the occupants of the hotel rooms. Apparently cryptic threats were posted on Facebook by the man’s family.
Cata’s father, Miguel, is in prison for minor offenses and allegedly tried to self-harm in his cell. Her mother ingested a small amount of bleach after the disappearance and had to be hospitalized with injuries. She posted on Facebook: “Forgive me my princess, I was weak. I will not rest until I find you.” (new)
