He had announced the “final battle”. But the start of the Armageddon of Donald Trump (77) before a court yesterday in the beach metropolis of Miami in Florida did not take place. Instead of the 50,000 supporters expected by the police, only a few 100 fans of the ex-president marched to cheer on their idol.
There was also little to cheer for Trump in the courtroom. The Republican was spared the obligatory police photo from the front and from the side (after all, if he escaped, he would be recognized by almost everyone in the world). When the allegations were read, however, there was no special treatment: Trump has been indicted in 37 cases for stealing secret nuclear documents and war plans from the White House, and even boasting that he owned them. When the FBI showed up, he hindered the officials in their work.
In the worst case, Trump risks 20 years in prison. His only salvation: re-election as president, which would almost automatically earn him a clean bill of health.
On the political scene, things are still looking good for Trump right now. He is still the undisputed star of the Republicans. Also because most of his opponents within the party in the presidential race have so far held their own. Hardly anyone dares to stab Trump in the back and alienate his supporters.
In addition, the public will probably not really understand until the process is over just how dangerous Trump’s negligent handling of America’s greatest state secrets was. It is still unclear when the process will start.
However, the meager platoon that stood in front of the courtroom in Miami yesterday already shows that Trump’s shine is quickly fading. Even former companions seem fed up with the same conspiratorial tirades about the “Fascist-Marxist-Communist” enemies seeking his freedom.
Even the once-loyal Trump subscribers at the mighty Fox News station are fed up with Trump’s nonsense. An interview with the channel’s former favourite? no. Instead of the big Fox stage, yesterday he had to go on second-rate radio shows and on his moderately successful network “Truth Social” to proclaim his hatred of the judiciary. Too bad for the former TV star.
But wherever Trump places his verbal attacks on the justice system that now grips him, the rule of law will not be intimidated. This sets him apart from all the challengers Trump has faced in his life so far.
The 77-year-old secretly knows that very well. “He pees his pants in fear,” predicted his former chief of staff John Kelly (73) on Monday. Maybe that’s why Trump is so shrill these days because he suspects the show will soon be over.
