In the Iranian capital Tehran, a well-known museum for Persian cats has to close until further notice. Museum employees confirm this to the DPA news agency on Tuesday.
The operators gave no reasons for the closure. However, the museum’s Instagram page states that they hope to be able to reopen its doors to visitors soon in collaboration with the authorities.
In recent months, numerous shops and restaurants had to close temporarily after authorities complained about violations of the applicable headscarf requirement. However, it is not known whether the closure of the cat museum may also be related to the possible disregard for the Islamic dress code. Since last year’s massive protests sparked by the death of Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in police custody, many women in Iran have demonstratively ignored the headscarf requirement, especially in major cities.
The Persian Cat Museum has also attracted international attention in the past. It became known because, in addition to being an exhibition venue, it was also a haven for stray cats. (sda/dpa)
