“Asked for something that isn’t right”: Dispute between Sunak and Johnson escalates

“Boris Johnson asked me to do something I wasn’t ready for because I didn’t think it was right,” Sunak said Monday. In response, Johnson again accused the incumbent prime minister: “Rishi Sunak is talking nonsense.”

The occasion is in honor of Johnson’s confidants and associates, whom the Conservative politician sought to appoint to the British House of Lords in thanks for their loyalty. After the responsible Holac committee rejected some nominations, Johnson apparently wanted Sunak to veto the decision.

“It was about overriding the Holac commission or making promises to people,” Sunak said. Johnson, on the other hand, said Sunak should have only asked Holac to extend the review, it was just a formality.

According to media reports, it concerns Johnson’s confidante Nadine Dorries. That is why the ex-prime minister wanted the former culture minister to be appointed to the House of Lords after the upcoming general election, which is expected to take place in autumn 2024. Holac rejected this citing valid deadlines. Dorries resigned from parliament with immediate effect on Friday, as did Johnson himself and MP Nigel Adams. This means that by-elections are taking place in these constituencies amid poor polling for the Tories. Defeats should put pressure on Sunak.

A Holac spokesperson said a total of eight of Johnson’s proposals were rejected. Only seven were accepted. The think tank Institute for the Government spoke of an unprecedented pace.

But there is also criticism of the honorees, who are entitled to a lifelong seat in the House of Lords. Among them is an ex-advisor of Johnson’s wife, Sarah Vaughan-Brown, who also walked the dog Dilyn. It was also criticized that Charlotte Owen, who was born in 1993 and was once an advisor to Johnson and is now the youngest member of the House of Lords in history, has barely made any achievements to warrant an appointment.
