Former Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon remains a member of the Scottish National Party (SNP) despite his temporary arrest.
Her successor, Humza Yousaf, told the BBC on Monday there was no reason to suspend the strong advocate of Scottish independence. “I will do what I think is right in terms of the values of natural justice,” said Yousaf, who is said to be a Sturgeon confidant. He stressed that the 52-year-old had been released without charge. The head of government emphasized that there was no pressure from him or the SNP on Sturgeon to relinquish her mandate in the regional parliament.
Earlier there had been calls from the SNP for Sturgeon to suspend his membership until the investigation into alleged misappropriation of party donations was completed. Meanwhile, the opposition parties stepped up the pressure. Party members have been suspended in similar cases, Anas Sarwar, leader of the Scottish Labor Party, told the PA news agency.
Police questioned Sturgeon for hours on Sunday. It concerns a possible misappropriation of donations of about 660,000 pounds (about 750,500 francs) intended for the SNP’s independence campaign. Sturgeon’s husband, Peter Murrell, who was in charge of the SNP’s finances for many years, and the SNP’s treasurer, Colin Beattie, were arrested in April.
Like Sturgeon, both were later released without charge. Authorities also searched a number of properties, including Sturgeon and Murrell’s home and the SNP party headquarters in Edinburgh. The ex-government vehemently denied the allegations. (aeg/sda/dpa)
