The Italian former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi († 86) has passed away. The figurehead of the right in Italy has lost the battle against leukemia. At noon, supporters and media representatives gathered in front of San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, where the 86-year-old died. The reactions of old companions and political opponents to the sad news were not long in coming.

The current Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (46) described Berlusconi as a “fighter” in a video message. He was a man “never afraid to defend his beliefs”. It was that courage and determination that would have made him one of the most influential men in Italian history. “The great fighter has left us. Rest in peace my friend!” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, 60, tweeted.

Matteo Renzi (48), who, like Berlusconi, was a former Prime Minister of Italy, said: “Silvio Berlusconi made history in this country. Many loved him, many hated him: everyone must now recognize that his influence on political life, but also on the economy, sports and television was unprecedented.”

All Italy mourns with his family and his company. “My sincere and warm hugs go to everyone who loved him,” Renzi continued. In these hours he carries with him the memories of the meetings with Berlusconi. Renzi recalled a phone call with Berlusconi talking about his mother, which brought tears to Renzi’s eyes.

Dedication to the «pro-European cause»

The news reached Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini (50), at the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Italian Coast Guard in Lesa. «A good friend from Lake Maggiore, a great Italian, decided to say goodbye today. I ask for a minute’s silence for Silvio Berlusconi,” Salvini said, according to Italian media.

Another former prime minister of Italy spoke with Romano Prodi (83). “In our long political confrontation,” said the leftist Prodi, “we have represented different and opposing worlds, but our rivalry has never turned into hostility on a personal level.” You respected each other. Prodi said he appreciated Berlusconi’s commitment to the “pro-European cause”.
