The rockfall on the Flüchthorn took place on Sunday afternoon.

A huge rock fall in the Austrian state of Tyrol has partially ripped away the approximately 3,400 meter high southern summit of the Flughorn massif.

According to the police in Tyrol, the rock masses on the northwestern flank of the southern Flüchthorn massif broke off around 3:20 p.m. The rock fell over the Flühhornferner, stone material also fell over the so-called “broad water” in the direction of the Jamtalhütte.

This is what the chairman of the mountain rescue service Galtür, Christian Walter, says to the “Tiroler Tageszeitung”. “The landslide was huge. The southern summit of the Flughorn no longer exists, and the summit cross has also disappeared.”

“Fortunately no one was on the way”

Mountain rescuer Riccardo Mizio tells the “Kronen Zeitung”: “Five minutes after the rockfall, a wild stream formed, rushing just a few meters past the Jamtalhütte. Fortunately, no one was around.”

The debris fell from a height of approximately 3400 meters on Sunday afternoon to 2100 meters near a stream bed located there. The length of the mudflow is more than two kilometers.

“The southern summit is no longer there, the cross on the summit is also gone”Christian Walter, President of the Galtür Mountain Rescue Service

Police fly over debris avalanche

A video released by Tyrol’s mountain rescue service showed the force of the debris and rocks thundering through the valley.

Police then flew a helicopter over the two kilometer long debris avalanche near the Swiss border. There is no evidence that people were harmed, it said. The nearby Jamtalhütte is currently closed. (neo/SDA)
