At least 27 people killed in violent storms in Pakistan Earthquake hits South Africa’s most populous province

At least 27 people have died after violent storms battered northwest Pakistan. “At least 12 people were buried alive when the roofs and walls of their houses collapsed,” the spokesman for the local disaster response said on Sunday.

The storms hit four districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province late on Saturday. In Bannu, 15 people were killed, including five siblings between the ages of two and 11. There were also 140 injured and 200 dead animals, according to the spokesman for the local disaster response. The authorities have declared a state of emergency for all districts.

Meanwhile, authorities in the south of the country warned of a cyclone approaching Pakistan and India from the Arabian Sea. The Sindh province civil defense forecast heavy rains and storms with speeds of 100 kilometers per hour in the coming week.

Last summer, Pakistan was hit by unusually heavy monsoon rains, flooding more than a third of the country. Two million homes were destroyed and more than 1,700 people lost their lives as a result of the flooding. (saw/sda/afp)
