An elevated section of busy highway I-95 collapsed on Sunday in the US city of Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Fire Department said the cause was a fire in the underpass under this short stretch of highway. There, a vehicle, possibly a fuel tanker, caught fire, causing the upper section of the highway to collapse. Exact details are not yet available. Firefighters are still trying to extinguish the fire. Initially nothing was known about injuries.

Traffic on the highway was blocked in both directions near the scene of the accident. I-95 is an important thoroughfare on the east coast of the US, connecting major cities such as Miami, Washington, Philadelphia and New York. The great north-south axis extends from the southern state of Florida to near the northern border between the US and Canada. (sda/dpa)
