The expert from the marine research station in Concarneau, Guillaume Massé, suspects that bacteria or viruses may have infected the starfish. Together with the strong wind, this could have caused the starfish to wash ashore.
Climate change or warming of the seas probably don’t play a role, since starfish tolerate quite large temperature differences, the researcher told the channel France Bleu. The scientist advised beachgoers and tourists to keep children away from the stranded starfish. “The smell of a decomposing starfish is never very pleasant.”
Trying to save the animals by throwing them back into the water is also useless, most of them are already dead or dying. Most of the carcasses would be swept away in the next high tide. Further south in Brittany and on the Atlantic coast, masses of starfish had already washed up in 2019 and 2022.
