The coronation ceremony for the British King Charles III. will take place on May 6 next year at London’s Westminster Abbey. During the ceremony, the king will be “anointed, blessed and consecrated” by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday evening. Charles’s wife, Queen Camilla, will also be crowned.
The coronation ceremony will “reflect the role of the monarch today” while being forward-looking and “anchored in the long tradition of the monarchy” in all its splendor, the palace said.
Charles, 73, ascended to the throne with the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8. It is not uncommon for several months to elapse between the accession to the throne and the coronation. Reasons are the mourning period and the necessary preparations for the elaborate ceremony.
