Children rescued in the jungle are stable; the dog does not appear

The miracle that Colombia had been waiting for for 40 days happened this Friday with the finding and rescue of four indigenous children who had been lost in the Amazon jungle since May 1 after the crash of the plane in which they were traveling with their mother, the pilot and another adult.

Although they look emaciated and malnourished in the photos, the foursome are in good health considering what they had to overcome dangers of the jungle and lack of food for 40 days.

“Are they hydrating and cannot digest foodbut in general the condition of the children is good,” Defense Minister Iván Velásquez told the media after visiting the children rescued in the jungle

According to Velásquez, the children received some of the hundreds of food packages dropped from the helicopter over several days and “managed to feed on them.”

A one-year-old baby requires the greatest nutritional care. He will spend about two weeks in the hospital.

In statements to the media, Icbf director Astrid Cáceres revealed that she asked the children about Wilson, the rescue dog who helped find them.

“They told me that a dog followed them for a while but then he left,” he said.

Army engineers said the operation is not over as soldiers continue to search day and night to find the four-legged hero.

Four children were traveling with three adults on the Avianline Charter Cessna 206 that crashed on May 1.

All three adults died in the accident, and their bodies were found several days later.

“They were alone, they managed on their own an example of survival that will remain in historyso today these children are children of peace,” said President Gustavo Petro.

The protagonists of this miracle of survival in danger and jungle are minor Lesly Mukutuy, 13 years old; Soleiny Mukutuy, 9; Tien Noriel Ronoque Mukutuy, 4, and one-year-old baby Cristin Neruman Ranoque.
