He is once again making history by becoming the first former US president to be indicted for federal crimes. He must appear in court in Miami next Tuesday

Donald Trump’s judicial troubles are piling up and he is once again making history, this time becoming the first former president of the United States to be indicted for federal crimes. A former resident of the White House faces 37 criminal charges for shaking hands more than three hundred classified documents which he took to his mansion in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, according to an indictment released Friday by the Justice Department. 37 federal crimes include illegal retention of state secrets (violation of espionage law), obstruction of justice and conspiracywho carry long prison sentences.

The 49-page federal indictment charges the same charges Waltin Nauta, A Trump aide who was seen removing boxes of classified documents from a Palm Beach mansion. The indictment, as announced by Trump himself, calls him to appear next Tuesday before the Federal District Court in Miami for the reading of the charges.

From his residence in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he spends his vacation playing golf, the former president announced on Thursday evening via his social network Truth Social that his legal team had informed him of the imminent “indictment” of “bullet box”. The re-election candidate compared his case to that of President Joe Bien, who is facing an investigation with some similarities to that of the former president. “I am an innocent man”he confirmed.

The indictment marks the first time a former White House resident has been charged with a federal crime. However, it is not the first time that Trump has made judicial history in the United States. His indictment in March last year in a Manhattan court for irregular payments to silence a sexual relationship with porn actress Stormy Daniels has already made the tycoon the first former president to face criminal charges.

Given the signs from the prosecutor’s office that they are preparing to file a new indictment, Trump said a few days ago that everything was in response to conspiracy to interfere in elections. The narrative promoted by the former president — and reinforced by his followers and a significant portion of the Republican Party — defends that his legal problems are motivated not by the commission of a crime, but by a “witch hunt” promoted by the Biden administration.

Trump also defended that it was impossible for him to be accused of possessing classified documents since one of the president’s prerogatives is to declassify those documents.

Reception in audio recording

On Friday morning, CNN claimed to have obtained a transcript of an audio recording of Trump admitted to possessing undisclosed secret military information. “When I was president, I could declassify, but now I can’t,” he is heard saying about the text that would talk about the Pentagon document referring to the attack on Iran.

If the charges against him are confirmed, a conviction could lead to a combined sentence of more than a hundred years of imprisonment. Some of them, such as those who fall under the anti-espionage law, would be sentenced to prison terms of up to 20 years.

Republicans believe that the problem is not the former president, but Justice

PM

After Donald Trump’s second accusation got out, the reaction of most Republican politicians was to take his version as true and attack the justice system. According to conservative leaders, Democrats are using justice as a weapon against Trump. The claim they make without, to date, any supporting evidence.

So, Kevin McCarthy, the leader of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, said that Thursday was a “dark day” for the United States. One of the policies that owes the most to Donald Trump, the congressman from Georgia Marjorie Taylor Greene, He went further and declared that “Democrats are arresting their political enemies”.

Rivals in the primaries

Even those who have benefited the most from Trump’s legal woes, his primary rivals, have closed ranks around the former president’s narrative. After learning that Trump would be indicted, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, confirmed that the use of justice as a weapon “represents a mortal danger to a free society”. For DeSantis, the indictment would be another example of “unequal application of the law based on political affiliation.” And he added that the “DeSantis administration” will hold the Justice Department “accountable.”
