Former US President Donald Trump has apparently been charged again by judicial authorities.

Former US president Donald Trump (76) says he was accused of handling secret service documents after his term in office. “The corrupt Biden administration has informed my lawyers that I have been charged, apparently over the affair with false classified documents,” Trump said on his online platform Truth Social on Thursday. A confirmation from the US Department of Justice was not initially available. Trump had already been charged in New York in connection with hush money payments to a porn star and was brought to trial in early April.

Trump condemned the actions of the US judiciary as “election interference at the highest level”. In a video on Truth Social, he again accused US President Joe Biden (80) and his Democrats of conducting a politically motivated witch hunt against him. “They are trying to destroy our reputation so they can win elections,” he told his supporters.

The Federal Police FBI had searched Trump’s private residence Mar-a-Lago in Florida in August and seized several classified information, some of them at the highest level of classification. The fact that the Republican kept the documents in his private home long after he left office could have prosecuted him. For months, the National Archives tried to obtain papers from the Trump administration. Trump’s lawyers eventually turned over documents — but not all of them, as the FBI search of the Mar-a-Lago property revealed.

being “innocent”.

“The corrupt Biden administration has informed my lawyers that charges have been filed against me, apparently for fraud (of allegedly classified documents) in boxes (…),” Trump wrote without specifying who his team was in contact with. . He was subpoenaed and was due to appear in court in Miami on Tuesday at 3 p.m. (local time). “I never thought it possible that something like this could happen to a former president of the United States (…)”, he continued. He added: “I am an innocent man!” he wrote in capital letters. It is “a dark day” for the United States.

American media had already reported on Wednesday that a new indictment against Trump could be closer because the team of special counsel Jack Smith had informed the Trump camp that the 76-year-old was a target of the investigation.

The US Justice Department appointed independent special counsel Smith in November to outsource the politically sensitive investigation of Trump. On the one hand, Smith handles the investigations into secret government documents. Second, it examines Trump’s role in storming the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and his efforts to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. A commission of inquiry had recommended criminal investigations to the Ministry of Justice. He accuses Trump of rioting, obstructing a public trial and conspiracy against the US government, among other things. However, the committee’s advice is not binding.

Further investigations are underway

Trump has long railed that his opponents are merely trying to prevent him from returning to the White House in 2024. He officially announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in November. So far he is leading in polls among party supporters – but a lot can still happen before the final decision is made.

Further investigation against Trump is ongoing. All eyes were on the New York case that led to the first criminal charge in U.S. history against a former president, in which he pleaded not guilty. In the state of Georgia, the prosecutor’s office is also investigating Trump for possible election manipulation. In another case, Trump has already been prosecuted — at least indirectly. His real estate group was fined in New York for tax fraud, among other things. The ex-president was not personally accused.

Secret government documents from his time as Vice President under Barack Obama were also found with US President Joe Biden in buildings where they should not have been kept. An independent special investigator is also active here. In the case of Biden, however, there are significantly fewer documents. According to the White House, Biden has not refused to hand over documents. (SDA/AFP/kes)
