The search for drunkenness and hundreds of ecstatic individuals in one place are not uncommon in special nightclubs. As a rule, however, it is people who exhibit such behavior and move rhythmically to the music.
The spectacle currently unfolding in Slovakia seems all the more grotesque. At one of the bodies of water there, up to 200 swans are apparently completely stunned and staggering about. Unlike their peers, who sometimes glide majestically over the lakes.
According to media reports, the bizarre scene takes place in a poppy field in Patince on the border with Hungary. What may sound funny to some people is actually a serious problem for the feathered creatures. Because: these birds have surrendered to the poppy rage and apparently can’t find a way out of their dependence.
Schwansinn in the #Slovakia: Up to 200 swans have been “scattering” on a poppy field for weeks. Out of pure relaxation, the birds whistle to build their nest and flee from the fox. This unusual situation not only causes a stir, but also poses major challenges for local authorities and environmental activists, SWR reports.
Organic farmer Balint Pem, owner of the poppy field, is concerned about the unusual behavior of the swans. “We have never experienced anything like this. The fact that swans graze even a part of the poppy,” he emphasizes. Normally, apart from their seeds, poppy plants are poisonous to animals. You can make painkillers out of it, but also heroin.
But these swans have discovered the intoxicating effect of poppy seed and have become addicted to it. At first there were only a few swans, but now the 200 or so animals on five hectares of his field have already destroyed most of the plants. According to the report, they are totally obsessed with opium use.
The drunken swans suffer the consequences of their drug parties. They seem dazed, staggering and can only move in a strange way. Some of them are even so weak that they can no longer fly, as the responsible veterinary service also noted. However, the birds are not sick.
The animals still require urgent medical attention and support due to their consumption. Environmentalists are convinced of this. According to the report, they have therefore set up a kind of rehab where sick swans are cared for. However, only limited capacities are available, which makes the situation even more difficult.
For organic farmer Pem, the situation is doubly problematic. On the one hand, he should not drive the swans away, because they are considered protected animals and he does not immediately have permission for that. Instead, his only option is to startle the birds by clapping his hands. On the other hand, he has not yet received any claims from his insurance company. They will be paid next year at the earliest. The state also looks bleak for the farmer.
The Slovak Ministry of the Environment explains that damage caused by swans is extremely rare and therefore the state cannot provide financial support. Pem’s only option is to keep track of the damage to his poppy field. Hoping that something can be done about it in the future.
