The fierce wildfires in Canada also affect the east coast of the US. Cities such as New York, Washington and Philadelphia were thick with smoke on Wednesday and authorities issued higher health warnings due to air pollution. Air quality in cities was “unhealthy” or even “very unhealthy” in some places, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams called on the population to limit outdoor activities “as much as possible”. People with breathing problems, the elderly and children are only allowed to stay indoors. Schools remained open, but outdoor activities for Wednesday were cancelled.
Wildfires have been raging in Canada for some time now, with hundreds of fires recorded since the spring. Winds carry the smoke particles to the southern neighbor US. According to experts, the frequency and severity of wildfires has increased due to global warming.
