A fire has broken out in a railway tunnel in the Austrian state of Tyrol. As the emergency services’ control room announced on Thursday evening, a night train of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) was hit, which was on its way from Innsbruck to Hamburg and Amsterdam. The 200 to 300 passengers have been evacuated from the tunnel, says Bernd Noggler from the control center of the German news agency. A few people were slightly injured, serious injuries are not known at the moment. The police spoke of a larger number of 50 people who were slightly injured or suspected of smoke inhalation.
Broadcasting organization ORF and news agency APA reported that, according to the emergency services, damage to the overhead line caused a fire in one or more cars that were being transported on a railcar on the train. The train was traveling through the Terfens railway tunnel at Fritzens at that time. ÖBB also reported in a Twitter message that damage to the overhead wires caused the fire.
The train was unable to continue due to the fire. Around 9 p.m. a large alarm went off. About 20 fire crews arrived on the scene to douse the flames and rescue the passengers. All people who did not require medical care were taken by bus to Innsbruck, where sleeping accommodation was also organized for all those affected. (SDA)
