One last walk: the whole town says goodbye to a terminally ill dog

He’s not just man’s best friend – Mellow was the best four-legged friend in an entire town. As of September 2019, owner Kevin Curry walked through Dupont, Pennsylvania twice a day. On Saturday, nearly everyone of the community’s 2,500 residents stood guard in the front yards — for Mellow’s last emotional walk.

In early March, the vet found aggressive lymph node cancer in the mongrel male Curry rescued from the animal shelter. Mellow only had a few months to live. Last Friday, the master left a note in every mailbox on the walking route.

In this letter he informed everyone about Mellow’s difficult fate and thanked him from a dog’s perspective for all the hugs over the past few years.

“Lots of goodies, crawling and crying”

He wrote, “It’s getting harder and harder to walk. I’m going for one last walk on Saturday night between 7 and 8 p.m. and would like to say goodbye to you all in person.” The note included a map of the route and $5 to buy a buy a gift for a dog or donate it to a good cause.

“On the first neighborhood block there were at least 25 people at the door, the next there were more than 20. That was the case all the way. There were many treats, scrapes and tears,” a neighbor told the New York Post. (jmh)
