Former NASA research head becomes professor at ETH Zurich

Former NASA research leader Thomas Zurbuchen becomes a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich). The university announced this on Thursday. Starting in August, the 55-year-old will lead the ETH Zurich Space initiative as ETH professor of space science and technology.

Born in Heiligenschwendi in the canton of Bern, Zurbuchen is one of the most influential researchers in the world, according to ETH Zurich. He had a decisive influence on space science. From 2016 to 2022 he was Director of Science at the American space agency NASA.

“The space industry is experiencing rapid dynamism worldwide. We want to ensure that Switzerland and Europe seize the new opportunities, remain competitive and increase their international visibility,” said Zurbuchen in announcing the new role. In addition, he will continue to work internationally as a speaker and advisor, which is why he will represent 60 percent work for ETH Zurich.

According to ETH president Joël Mesot, Zurbuchen “chose ETH Zurich despite numerous offers from top universities around the world”. Space research in Switzerland and across Europe will greatly benefit from this. (sda)
