National Council Committee on Reduced Tobacco Taxes on E-Cigarettes

Tobacco tax is due on e-cigarettes. Because they are less harmful, the National Council Economic Commission (WAK-N), like the Federal Council, wants to tax them at a lower rate. The Commission also wants to stick to the 20 centimes per milliliter of liquid.

The WAK-N fully follows the Council of States, the parliamentary services announced on Wednesday. Minorities for a tax of 15 or 11 centimes per milliliter of liquid failed.

Other minorities wanted higher tax rates on heated tobacco products and disposable electronic cigarettes in the interest of environmental protection and tobacco prevention. The majority of the Commission also rejected taxation based on nicotine content.

The Commission recognized the need to adapt tobacco duty to market realities. However, she would like to base her work on e-cigarettes more broadly.

With 17 votes in favour, 7 against and one abstention, she approved a postulate for an overall picture of the market for tobacco and tobacco substitute products. On this basis, a comprehensive review of the tobacco tax could be tackled. (oo/sda)
