Renewable energy sources such as ambient heat, biomass, wind and especially solar energy are the order of the day to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas CO₂ and thus slow down global warming. In Switzerland, the share of renewables in total energy consumption has been growing in recent years and stands at around 27 percent (as of 2020).

Is that enough to be one of the international leaders? An answer offers the Green Future Index, which the renowned science magazine MIT Technology Review is publishing for the third time this year. It is a comparative ranking of 76 countries, weighted according to their environmental sustainability. In the field of renewable energy, the Green Future Index evaluates the commitment – political and economic – of the individual countries and their progress – such as green innovations or the growth rate of renewable energy generation.

Please note: this is not a simple ranking of countries based on the share of renewable energy sources in the electricity mix, but about investments in and growth in renewable energy sources and progress in the transition to climate-friendly forms of energy.
