Doctors in the Czech Republic removed a 200-gram hairball from the abdomen of a young patient. The girl suffers from the extremely rare Rapunzel syndrome, in which people pull their hair out and eat it, reports the hospital in Opava, Silesia.
This is a very serious disease, treating surgeon Matus Peteja said Wednesday. In the worst case, there would have been a risk of tissue death. The child survived the operation, which took place at the end of February, without complications.
According to the information provided, the operation was performed minimally invasively through the stomach wall using a laparoscopy. The hairball covered an area of about 20 by 8 centimeters.
Rapunzel syndrome is a mental disorder that can have serious consequences. In addition to abdominal pain, the hairball can cause a blockage in the digestive tract and even lead to death. The syndrome is named after the Grimm Brothers fairytale character Rapunzel, who has an unusually long braid of hair. (aeg/sda/dpa)
