According to a new survey, about six percent of patients in Swiss hospitals contract an infection. Despite the pandemic, the situation remained stable in 2022. According to the study, there is a need to improve the training and prevention of personnel.
108 acute hospitals took part in the national survey, representing 80 percent of all acute beds in Switzerland, as the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) announced on Tuesday. 14,000 patients were studied.
The number of infections during a stay in a Swiss hospital has remained constant in recent years. The most recent figure corresponds to that of the last survey in 2017. Switzerland was in the middle of the European table for hospital-acquired infections.
Wound infections after surgical procedures were most common, followed by urinary tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections and bloodstream infections. According to the research, staff training, the review of everyday processes and the implementation of infection prevention projects need to be improved. (aeg/sda)
