A non-hormonal contraceptive pill for men shows promising results in a study with mice. According to the researchers, the drug can be taken just before sex if necessary. However, according to a Swiss expert, there is still a long way to go.
The researchers from the US tested the preparation on mice. After ingestion, the male mice were infertile for two hours, according to the study published Tuesday in the renowned journal “Nature Communications”. After 24 hours, male fertility was back to normal. There were no side effects.
Phillipp Quaas of the University Hospital Basel is also clear: “This approach has potential,” said the doctor who was not involved in the study when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. “However, more information is needed for approval of this active ingredient as a medicine.” In particular, human studies should be conducted. It will take at least another five to ten years before approval is granted. (aeg/sda)
