Closure of the emergency room in Martigny: “This is just the beginning”

The overnight closure of the emergency room in Martigny, US, announced last week, reflects a widespread problem, said the co-chair of the Swiss Society for Emergency Medicine.

“This is just the beginning,” Vincent Ribordy told Le Temps. “It had to happen, even though we didn’t think Switzerland would be hit so quickly and so badly,” Ribordy said in an interview published Monday.

In the eyes of the doctor, Martigny is a concrete consequence of the lack of qualified personnel. A problem that has been known for several years. “It was thought that the capacity of the system was limitless, but that is not the case,” says Ribordy.

Alternatives should be found to relieve the burden on the control rooms, which are now used as the main interface with the population. “But none of this will work as long as there is a shortage of GPs,” he warned. Quota schemes are not effective. There is a lack of recognition for the profession. (sda)
