Federal negotiations with Swiss food producers and retailers for less salt in food have failed. They are, however, prepared to mix less sugar in soft drinks, milk drinks and cottage cheese.
Unfortunately, the proposed salt reduction targets would not be supported by the industry, a spokeswoman for the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (BLV) told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Sunday. The “Sonntagszeitung” had first reported on the failed negotiations. The reason for this was, among other things, that the companies were not allowed to use substitute products.
Next, the FSVO wants to analyze which rules and regulations have worked abroad and which have not. In addition, it is investigating regulatory measures that could legally require a salt reduction for certain products.
However, people are still convinced that voluntary cooperation with agreed goals is a good way, said the spokeswoman. To achieve a salt reduction of the population, the entire industry must join hands. This is the only way the consumer can slowly get used to a less salty taste and make healthy choices when shopping.
However, the federal government succeeded in reducing sugar. There will soon be less sugar in soft drinks, mixed drinks and cottage cheese. All relevant companies are ready to achieve a 10 percent sugar reduction there by the end of 2024, the BLV said when asked, confirming a corresponding report in the “NZZ am Sonntag”. Exactly which companies have committed to this will be announced in early 2023.
The federal government announced that this was an important step in efforts to reduce sugar intake in Switzerland. It was already agreed in 2015 as part of the “Milan Declaration” about less sugar in yogurt and breakfast cereals.
In 2019, 14 companies agreed to reduce the sugar content in yogurt by 10 percent and that of grains by 15 percent by 2024. The companies sign an annex to the “Milan Declaration” for the new reduction of sugar in soft drinks, mixed milk drinks and cottage cheese.
