With Rishi Sunak, a head of government moves to Downing Street who only hears the financial worries and fears of the average Briton. He and his wife have a net worth of approximately CHF 800 million. This is probably the first time in Europe that a head of state in a constitutional monarchy is richer than the monarch. Since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the head of state in Great Britain has been her son, King Charles III. His fortune would be about 650 million francs.
While Sunak’s circumstances are relatively well known, myths surround the wealth of other government leaders. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has amassed a fortune of 750 million euros, his political opposition claims. It is managed by front men and family members. The accused immediately denied: “I have never been a rich man, I am not a rich man and I will never be a rich man.”
Similar allegations are circulating about Recep Erdoğan. In 2018, documents of his fortune (with his blessing) were released. According to these official figures, the Turkish president owns $2 million in cash and real estate (minus debt). But according to Turkish businessman Rahmi Koc, these numbers are complete nonsense. Erdoğan is worth more than a billion dollars. This statement has not been proven.
But the biggest myths are related to the fate of Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyi. Both are said to be worth billions – probably with varying levels of truth. Citing the work of a Russian journalist, the BBC estimated Putin’s fortune in 2019 at $40 billion. The once largest private investor in Russia, the American critic of Putin, Bill Browder, believes the Russian head of state has more than 200 billion. That would make Putin the second richest man in the world, after Elon Musk.
Ukrainian president and former media entrepreneur Selenskyi, meanwhile, bakes smaller sandwiches. Forbes estimates his fortune at 20 million francs – the rumor that Selenskyi is a billionaire comes from American conspiracy theorist Lee Stranahan. The former erotic photographer and Breitbart writer now works for the Russian radio station Sputnik.
The examples show: In many cases, asset determination is anything but an exact science. Rather, it is an estimate from financial portals such as “Forbes” and “Bloomberg”. For this reason, no ranking is given in this context.
Xi Jinping is missing from this list. Assets in the billions are also suspected of the increasingly powerful Chinese president. However, there is no reliable source for this. Just like Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz. The English “Express” recently tried to figure out Macron’s fortune – and came up with 550,000 euros. When the former banker left banking and entered politics in 2012, he had 5 million. However, these should have disappeared by now. And finally, for the most powerful man in the world, Joe Biden may not be starving at eight million, but he’s not one of the world’s elite when it comes to wealth.
