One in five young adults in Switzerland has a psychological diagnosis

Research shows that most Swiss are very satisfied. However, there are striking differences between age groups, with a fifth of 18 to 29 year olds suffering from a diagnosed mental illness or disorder.

This means that the proportion of people currently affected (19 percent) in this age group is almost twice as high as among people over the age of 29, where 8 percent currently suffer from a diagnosed mental health condition. In addition, more than a tenth of affected young people do not have access to therapy.

This is evident from a study by the market research agency Yougov Switzerland (formerly Link), which was published on Tuesday on the occasion of this year’s World Happiness Day on Wednesday.

This difference between the age groups is also reflected in the actual relationship that the research participants have with psychological or psychiatric therapies: of the participants between 60 and 79 years old, almost three quarters (71 percent) have never been in therapy. and have no need for it. However, the share increases again in the middle age groups.

In short, most Swiss are happy. On a scale of 0 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (very satisfied), the vast majority of participants (73 percent) said they felt a high level of satisfaction with their lives, which corresponds to a scale point of 7 or higher. This satisfaction also seems to be stable in the long term for almost every second person.

Participants were also asked how often they engage in various happiness-enhancing activities. A third-order social interaction with friends or family as the most important activity for their own well-being. This is followed by time for yourself (15 percent) and exercise (11 percent).

The survey was conducted this year from February 14 to 28 in Yougov’s Swiss online panel in German, French and Italian. 1,253 people in Switzerland between the ages of 18 and 79 were interviewed. According to Yougov Switzerland, they were representative of the local population. (rbu/sda)
