Berner Inselspital Group writes a loss of 113 million francs

The Berner Insel Group posted a consolidated loss of 112.7 million francs in 2023. With the closures of the hospitals in Münsingen and Tiefenau and the commissioning of the new Anna Seiler House at the Inselspital, the group has taken important strategic steps for the future, according to a statement on Wednesday.

The group loss was almost 33 million francs higher than the year before. The archipelago also recorded losses on the EBITDA margin, an important parameter for a hospital operation. It was minus 0.5 percent. Last year this was still plus 2.0 percent.

According to the communiqué, increased electricity costs (plus 240 percent), general inflation (about 2 percent) and improvements in working conditions (wage measures of 2.5 percent) resulted in additional costs of more than 50 million francs in 2023. The additional costs could only be partially compensated with additional income, partly because the tariff situation remained very tense.

In 2023, 57,180 acute hospital patients were treated on the archipelago. According to the hospital group, this corresponds to a decrease of 4.3 percent compared to the previous year. The number of outpatient consultations fell by 3.2 percent to 928,830 cases.

All in all, according to the communiqué, the archipelago is optimistic about the future. The focus is on the opening of the new main building of the Inselspital, the Anna Seiler House, in September 2023. The modern new building offers significant added value to both patients and employees. (sda)
