Lausanne Hotel Management School closed due to the measles outbreak

The Lausanne Hotel Management School (EHL) campus will remain closed until February 18 due to several cases of measles infection. Since mid-January, six students have contracted measles and about 20 others are showing symptoms.

As a result of these developments and the instructions of the canton doctor, the EHL campus in Lausanne had to be closed, according to a statement published on the hotel management school’s website on Friday. “We have a responsibility to take all possible measures to limit possible spread and, after careful consideration, closing the campus is the best guarantee for this,” said the head of the EHL Group, Markus Venzin.

According to the announcement, students who remain on campus during the closure will primarily be housed in the dormitories. You will receive online lessons. According to information on the website, approximately 3,950 people are currently registered as students at EHL. Just under 1,000 of them live on campus.

The cantonal health department has now ordered a check on the measles vaccination status of all students, staff and teachers currently on campus, the report said. The EHL recommends that all students and staff check their vaccination status and, if necessary, get vaccinated and limit social interactions in the coming days, especially with people at risk.

The goal is to reopen the campus for the new semester without delay on February 19.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infectious disease. It is transmitted through droplets, for example when infected people cough or sneeze. Infected people usually first have fever, coughing, runny nose and inflammation in the nasopharynx, followed by a rash.

One in ten people affected have complications, including life-threatening brain infections. Measles can be prevented with two doses of the vaccine. (dabbing/sda)
