Japan’s Slim spacecraft is operational again after power was restored. Japan’s Jaxa space agency immediately began scientific observations on Monday, it announced.
“Last night we managed to establish communication with Slim and resume operations,” Japan’s Jaxa space agency said on the X short message service on Monday.
Slim – short for ‘Smart Lander for Investigating Moon’ – landed on the moon over a week ago. Japan managed to land on the moon in its third attempt after two failed missions. Previously, only the US, the Soviet Union, China and India had successfully landed on the moon.
However, after landing there were problems with the power supply via the solar cells, which meant that the space probe had to be switched off. However, before the shutdown, the control center in Japan could still download data and photos stored and taken during the descent and after landing on the lunar surface. (sda/afp)
