The first companies in Switzerland pay to freeze eggs

The first companies in Switzerland pay the costs for egg freezing. For example, since the beginning of October, pharmaceutical company Merck has been reimbursing the costs if employees want to have their eggs frozen as a precaution.

It is part of the solution for a better work-life balance, said Florian Schick, director of Merck Switzerland, when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. Ultimately, this can create a more inclusive and diverse work environment.

Ethically, however, this is not unproblematic, Markus Zimmermann, vice-chairman of the National Ethics Committee (NEK) in the field of human medicine, told Keystone-SDA. “We at the National Ethics Commission look at this quite skeptically,” the ethicist said. He fears that this could cause restrictions. Moreover, there is too much interference from the employer in private life.

According to experts, more and more women in Switzerland are having their eggs frozen as a precaution. The costs for this are approximately 10,000 francs. (saw/sda)
