Voice messages: many people hate them, some like them – here’s Watson’s opinion

Team Watson

Everyone knows it: the short and almost annoying ‘ping’ of a received WhatsApp message. But sometimes, although not that often, as a Galaxus study shows, there is no text message with the sender’s name, but a small microphone with the words “voice message”, which some people hate. These eleven opinions from the Watson editors show how controversial the voice messages are.

Voice messages have one thing in particular: disrespectful. Because: With a spoken message, the time problem is passed on from the sender to the recipient. In other words: the time the sender gains by not texting, the receiver loses by listening. And this despite the fact that the sender wants to communicate something to the receiver. No matter what the channel says, it always says: My time is more important than yours.
Aaaah! Finally! Finally I can express my hatred properly! My hatred of voicemail, the scourge of modern life. Voice messaging offers the ability to send a text message to the person you’re talking to without restrictions – and people are eager to take advantage of that. And – I’m sorry to say – especially women. Voice messages are terror. A plague against which there is no vaccination. They have a devastating effect because the effort required to pronounce them is inversely proportional to the effort required to distill the information they contain. This is especially true because the average voicemailer makes no effort to be concise and concise. Anyone who’s ever wanted to be sure of important information, like the time and place of a meeting, and had to listen to a bunch of voice messages, knows what I mean. Voice messaging should be banned, and the fact that a liberal person like me is making such a demand shows how bad things are.
A few months ago my phone screen broke for what felt like the twentieth time. This time it was especially bad because I could no longer write properly. It got worse because I wanted to wait for the stupid iPhone 15 Pro. The combination of these unfortunate circumstances resulted in me sending only voice messages to my friends. After all, they knew my cell phone was broken. But instead of just writing back, they decided to send me voice messages as well. That was super annoying because they didn’t have a special permit like I did. The constant ping-ponging of voice messages became too tiring, so I just bought an iPhone. Now my life is back on track.
I’m pretty neutral about voicemail. If you want to send someone a “life update” after a while, a voice message is certainly practical. For the listener, on the other hand, it is difficult to remember the details to respond after 7+ minutes of talking. But the pros and cons are balanced: sometimes I’m the one talking, sometimes I’m the one listening.
I love voice messages. Most of all, I enjoy sending these. If you have to do it quickly, there is nothing more practical than that, because you will listen to it twice as fast anyway.
Languages are the BEST. Especially the ones that start with “Wait, I’m going to do the language, writing would be very complicated…”, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes! You can tell everything. EVERYTHING! Get out of the system!
An “invention” that is more annoying than useful. But at least it’s a lesser evil than someone calling… I’m glad I have a circle of friends where hardly anyone sends voice messages. It is actually very rare that there is something to say that would actually be too long to write. Then I’m annoyed that I received a long voice message, but I’m glad the person didn’t call.
I’m in between. I have the usual one or two suspects who keep sending voice messages – that can be quite annoying and cause some eye rolling. Fortunately, there is an option to play the messages faster. However, there are also situations in which I am very happy to receive a voice message: for example, if it comes from someone I have not seen or spoken to for a long time. Or when I’m home sick. Or if I particularly like the person.
I hate them. Either you can’t hear it at the moment, or you have to pause your music, podcast, series, etc. to listen to the 90 percent unnecessary chatter, even though you could have summarized the message in one or two sentences. However, I think the new video messages on WhatsApp are excellent.
I think voice messages are good. It’s nice to hear someone’s voice and it’s also practical if it takes a little longer to say briefly than to type it all out. Voice messages are only annoying when the person messaging you doesn’t know exactly what they want to say and is still trying to figure out what they’re actually talking about the entire time they’re recording…
In my area, people only send each other a voice message when asked: “Verzell!” That’s what we mean too. And detailed. With all the details. I want to hear what you experienced as if I were there. I want to laugh with you, hear your voice when you’re not feeling well, when you’re angry about something. This of course also works via a telephone call. But especially if both have completely different daily lives or one of them currently lives on a different continent, calling is more complicated. Or does daily stress become just another ‘task’ that you still have to do. Stressful. I don’t feel that way about my friends’ voicemails. I like to listen to them when I have time and respond when it suits me. For me, voice messages are primarily a way to keep in closer contact, even in difficult times. A piece of friendship in MP3 format.
