Is there potential for savings? This will be the lowest health insurance premium in your municipality in 2024

This afternoon the Federal Council presented the health insurance premiums for the coming year. Depending on the community in which you live, healthcare costs can vary greatly – insured people from Appenzell Innerrhoden and Central Switzerland benefit particularly cheaply.

After last year’s premium shock, healthcare premiums will also rise sharply in 2024. Federal councilor Alain Berset announced this today at a press conference on Tuesday. On average, premiums will increase by 8.7 percent and the average monthly premium will amount to no less than 359.50 francs in the coming year.

But what does that mean for you? By indicating your municipality of residence and your desired deductible, you can calculate your premiums for 2024 using the federal government’s premium calculator ‘priminfo’. To show the differences per region, we have calculated some sample premiums.

Anyone aged 26 or older no longer receives a youth discount and must pay the adult premium. This is most expensive for people from the Basel region with a maximum deductible of 2,500 francs: they still pay 391 francs per month with the cheapest health insurer.

In the five municipalities of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden you pay only half: Appenzell, Gonten, Oberegg, Schlatt-Haslen and Schwende-Rüte. The cheapest health insurance model costs 189.50 francs per month.

The lower the deductible, the higher the premium: with a deductible of 1,000 francs, you pay at least 268.90 francs in Appenzell. Basel and the surrounding communities have monthly contributions starting from 472.40 francs.

With the smallest possible deductible of 300 francs, the minimum contributions vary between 306.90 francs in Appenzell and 510.10 francs in Basel.

These are the most expensive regions (for adults with a maximum deductible of 2,500 francs):

  1. Canton of Basel-Stadt
  2. Canton of Geneva
  3. Canton Neuchâtel
  4. Southern region canton of Vaud
  5. Southern region of the canton of Ticino

These are the cheapest regions:

  1. Canton Appenzell Innerrhoden
  2. Canton of Uri
  3. Canton Nidwalden
  4. Canton Obwalden
  5. Eastern region Canton Valais

People under the age of 26 benefit from a lower health insurance premium. Young adults also get the cheapest option in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden with the maximum deductible of 2,500 francs, where they pay 132.70 francs per month. Healthcare costs are highest in the canton of Geneva: 270.70 francs per month are paid there.

Even with a deductible of 1,000 francs, the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden comes out best: health care costs at least 187.50 francs. Here too, Geneva residents pay the highest premiums, 352.10 francs per month.

Even with a deductible of 300 francs, you benefit in the Appenzell region: you are insured for 225.50 francs. In the canton of Geneva you pay exactly 390 francs for the same service.

In these regions, young adults pay the most for health insurance (with a deductible of 2,500 francs):

  1. Canton of Geneva
  2. Canton of Basel-Stadt
  3. Canton Neuchâtel
  4. Southern region of the canton of Ticino
  5. Southern region canton of Vaud

The premiums are the lowest in these regions:

  1. Canton Appenzell Innerrhoden
  2. Canton Obwalden
  3. Canton of Uri
  4. Canton Nidwalden
  5. Canton of Zug

You have until the end of November 2023 to change health insurer.

If you want to change your basic insurance, you must cancel no later than the end of November. The cancellation must be received by the health insurer no later than November 30, during normal office hours. You can take out new insurance until December 31. Please note: Different conditions apply to supplementary insurance, sometimes even notice periods of six months.
