The Swiss National Science Foundation should strengthen research into endometriosis. The National Council demands this with a motion. Among other things, the financial consequences of pelvic disorders in women for health insurers and society should be examined.
On Wednesday, the Grand Chamber accepted a corresponding proposal from centrist National Councilor Benjamin Roduit (US) with 106 votes in favor, 76 votes against and 9 abstentions. This now goes to the Council of States.
According to the petitioner, one in ten women suffer from endometriosis. For many specialists, the number of cases has literally exploded in recent years.
Roduit justified his motion by stating that, according to experts, early detection of endometriosis is still in its infancy. A prompt diagnosis would be important to halt the disease and preserve or regain fertility and quality of life for patients. Extensive research is needed to develop the necessary instruments.
Research Minister Guy Parmelin requested on behalf of the Federal Council that the motion be rejected. He pointed out that the National Fund already finances individual research projects in the field of endometriosis or related topics. Researchers have the opportunity at any time to apply for additional funding to carry out scientific projects. He does not think it is wise to politically dictate the research topic of endometriosis.
In the spring, Parliament had already called for improvements in the targeted financing of research into specific women’s diseases and their treatment. The Federal Council was instructed to conduct more targeted research into women-specific diseases and complaints and to guarantee the quality of the treatment of these diseases. (sda)
