Money can’t buy happiness, but it still makes many things easier. But how much money do you need to live a largely worry-free life? Of course, there is no general answer to this question as it can be very subjective.
However, there is an objectively definable limit: a certain income level at which further income increases no longer affect a person’s happiness.
The online money exchange bank S Money evaluated data from 173 countries and determined this saturation point of income per country. The analysis reveals some surprising findings.
S Money’s analysis shows that you need a lot of money to be happy in Iran – namely an annual income of around 223,300 euros. With a gross national income of approximately 3,140 euros (as of 2020), it is more a utopia than a norm in Iran. The country tops the list of countries.
In Sierra Leone in West Africa, however, an annual income of about 8,070 euros is enough to be happy. What seems like relatively little money for the Swiss is still out of reach for many people from Sierra Leone. The country has a gross national income of just under 475 euros (as of 2021) and is one of the poorest countries in the world.
According to research in Switzerland, you need 107,850 euros (almost 104,000 francs) to be happy. To put it into perspective, in 2022, about 29 percent of men working full-time earned more than 104,000 francs per year, while this figure for women was only 17 percent, as the Federal Statistical Office calculated.
To get 104,000 francs in Switzerland, you need a monthly salary of 8,000 CHF (times 13). The table below shows how many Swiss actually have this:
According to statistics, in Germany you need an annual income of approximately 76,370 euros. Compared to other countries, reality and ideal are not so far apart in Germany. In 2021, the gross national income amounted to 51,040 euros.
In Europe, Norway tops the rankings. Anyone who earns at least 109,700 euros per year in the Scandinavian country lives comfortably. This puts Norway in fifth place in the general rankings, closely followed by Switzerland (107,850 euros).
