Donald Trump is the first former president in US history to stand trial for multiple alleged crimes. He is accused of orchestrating a conspiracy against the US to disenfranchise voters and obstruct an official trial. Some face up to 20 years in prison.

The storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 could ultimately prove fatal to Trump

At the center of the new and most serious lawsuit is his attempts to subsequently reverse his own defeat in the 2020 presidential election by Joe Biden. Trump’s campaign against the election results culminated on January 6, 2021 in an unprecedented attack by his supporters on the US Capitol. Several people were killed in the riots.

Trump is accused in the new indictment of orchestrating a conspiracy against the United States

The latest indictment is the second federal indictment against Trump, and the third overall

Trump was due to appear before a judge in Washington on Thursday and pleaded “not guilty.”

In recent months, he has already been charged with paying hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels

Another lawsuit concerns the unlawful retention of secret government documents in his private home after the end of his term

The evidence seems overwhelming, but Trump dismisses all allegations

Trump has been repeating for months that the allegations are an attempt by his opponents to prevent him from returning to the White House

The ex-president faces two more lawsuits in the 2024 election year on the other two charges

He could soon face a fourth charge of attempted voter fraud in Georgia

If convicted, the Republican could face decades in prison

Trump has been charged with 78 crimes so far

With each indictment and the related uproar surrounding him, Trump’s campaign fundraising increases

Many Democrats therefore fear that the lawsuits will boomerang if they are not watertight

Meanwhile, Trump party colleague Marjorie Taylor Greene

Polls show he is well ahead of the Republican presidential candidates

Trump’s biggest Republican rival, Ron DeSantis, is plummeting in the polls

Experts say a conviction would not legally prevent Trump from running for the 2024 election

But the trial could one day end in a jail cell when all legal remedies are exhausted
