Emperor penguins are suffering enormously from the disappearance of sea ice in Antarctica. The rapid melting of the ice last year led to the death of all chicks in four of the five colonies in the Bellingshausen Sea, according to a study published Thursday.
Satellite images showed that the areas of ice used by the penguins as nesting grounds had completely disappeared before the chicks developed their waterproof plumage, the British Antarctic Survey found. According to the researchers, the loss of sea ice in this region during the Antarctic summer made it very unlikely that chicks survived.
“We’ve never seen emperor penguins breed to this extent in one season,” study group leader Peter Fretwell said in a statement about the study.
The complete failure of reproduction is a direct result of the unprecedented loss of sea ice recorded in recent years due to climate change, the statement said. (sda/dpa)
